AfdCMS is a custom content management system developed by Ask For Dowding. It brings together straightforward content administration, secure access and a carefully controlled approach to releasing software. The aim was not simply to build a place to edit pages, but to create a platform that could be maintained, deployed and supported with confidence.

Most content management systems focus on editing pages. Real-world applications need much more. They need secure user access, dependable releases, scalable file storage, environment management, monitoring, and clear recovery paths when things go wrong. AfdCMS was created to solve these challenges from the start, delivering a platform that supports both content editors and the teams responsible for keeping production systems running smoothly.
The Challenge
Many CMS platforms become difficult to maintain as they grow. Updates rely on manual processes, deployments become risky, and critical functionality depends on third-party plugins that introduce uncertainty and technical debt.
The goal for AfdCMS was different:

Rather than focusing solely on content editing, the objective was to engineer the entire operational lifecycle of the application.

AfdCMS was developed as a modern .NET application, with content management separated from the operational services that support the platform. Designed Around Everyday Publishing
A content management system should help teams publish quickly, not create obstacles. The AfdCMS administration interface was designed to keep common publishing tasks straightforward while still offering the flexibility of a fully custom platform. Editors can manage content, upload media, and maintain their website through a clean administration experience that prioritises usability without sacrificing control.

Key Technical Challenges Solved
Secure authentication across environments
Google Authentication required careful management of environment-specific configurations and callback behaviour. Rather than treating authentication as an isolated feature, the entire sign-in flow was engineered and validated across deployment environments to ensure consistent user access.
Media storage independent of deployments
Cloudflare R2 enables uploaded content to exist independently from application releases. This prevents deployments from impacting media assets and provides a cleaner separation between content and infrastructure.

AfdCMS incorporates structured deployment processes, environment management and operational visibility, reducing risk and improving confidence when releasing new features
